Frequently Asked Questions

We have provided a center for frequently asked questions that we hope you find helpful. If you have a question that is not answered below, please do not hesitate to call (314) 909-9922.

What are the ages of the kids that you see?

We provide services for children ages 3 ½ to 18 for Group and Individual Counseling.

How do we get started?

For families in the beginning stages of separation, we offer a Consultation appointment. These sessions are just for parents, either together or separately. Consultations are helpful for parents who are getting ready to separate and would like to consult with a therapist about the best way to tell the children or other specific issues. Consultations can also be useful for parents who are getting remarried and would like to talk about ways to prepare for their new, blended family.

Once parents are ready to involve their child(ren) in services, the first step in our process involves setting up an Initial Interview.

  1. A brief telephone interview with the Client Services Coordinator.
  2. A parent session with an Intake Therapist.
  3. A separate child(ren) session on a different day (with the same therapist).
  4. Services for children and parents begin after these initial interviews are finished, and clinical recommendations have been made.

How much do services cost?

We use a sliding-scale based on income and ability to pay. Most families qualify for reduced fees. No one is turned away due to an inability to pay for services. To apply for reduced fees, you will be asked to submit financial verification.

Do you accept insurance?

Kids In The Middle is not in-network with any insurance providers; however, some insurance policies cover our services. It is up to the parent to call the insurance provider and ask if they will cover our services. If you opt to use insurance, keep in mind that you pay the full rate to Kids In The Middle at the time of service, and are reimbursed by your insurance company later.

Who is responsible for payment?

For children’s services, one parent is responsible for payment. For services that require both parent’s participation, such as co-parenting counseling, each parent is responsible for their portion of their assigned fee.

Do I have to tell the other parent about our child’s involvement with Kids In The Middle?

Treatment is most effective when supported by both parents. Unless you have sole legal custody and have provided documentation, both parents must be informed about your child’s involvement with Kids In The Middle. If consent is not obtained from both parents, we cannot proceed with services for your child. Even if you do have sole legal custody, we suggest you inform the other parent. It prevents your child from being “in the middle” by keeping secrets from the other parent.

What if both parents want to be involved but do not wish to meet together?

We encourage both parent’s involvement when possible; however, parents will meet separately with a therapist for the initial intake. At times, both parents may be asked to attend a Treatment Review together if it is helpful to the child(ren).

Can my “significant other” participate in sessions with me?

Treatment begins with a child’s legal guardian(s). Other adults important to the child are often a valuable source of information and insight. With both parent’s consent, others may also be included in treatment at a time when the therapist feels that their participation will be most helpful to the child’s progress.

Is childcare available for my children?

Kids In The Middle does not provide childcare, and children will not be permitted in adult sessions. Additionally, young children (preschool through third grade) cannot be unsupervised in the lobby.

How will I be kept informed of my child’s progress?

Your child’s therapist will meet with you quarterly during a Treatment Review session to evaluate your family’s service plan, goals, and progress.

Is information kept confidential?

All information shared with Kids In The Middle is kept strictly confidential. Unless there are safety concerns, information disclosed is not shared among family members, the courts, or other involved parties. Kids In The Middle does not testify in court, does not provide custody evaluations, forensic evaluations, or release records. As a result, the agency remains a safe place for ALL members of the family to discuss issues of concern and work on positive outcomes for parents and their children.

How long do families receive services from Kids In The Middle?

The length and type of services vary from family to family. From experience, we know that children tend to be most successful when both parents take an active role in their child’s treatment and attend sessions consistently.

What should I do if I have to miss an appointment?

Regular, consistent attendance is an important part of treatment. If it becomes necessary to miss a session, advance notice is needed. Absences are charged at the full rate unless 24 hours notice is given. For Group Counseling, all absences are charged at the full rate except that one group session every three months may be missed without charge. Clients may be withdrawn from services as a result of inconsistent attendance or persistent tardiness.
